Is your child having difficulty performing academically?

There are many different reasons the students can have difficulty performing academically. If your child has a significant difference between their intellectual ability and their performance on academic tasks of reading, writing, or arithmetic they may be eligible for adjustments in teaching that will help your students thrive.

Many times there is much misunderstanding about how to go about having an assessment completed for students at no cost to the parents. Here is a great resource on how to go about requesting an assessment for a learning disorder from Sarasota County School Board.

Charles R. Davenport, Psy.D., LLC. has a blog entry about students who have difficulty performing academically.

Have you ever lied to someone you loved or yourself...?

Well, if you are being honest you probably answered yes! From our earliest days in life, as humans, we may try to deny reality to help us feel better or even survive. This is a powerful technique that our minds reflexively use to protect us however at times he can go awry and leave us stuck and painful repetitive patterns. Frequently these patterns are diagnosed as depression, anxiety, or social phobia, and can manifest as relationship problems,  difficulty sleeping, or overeating, drinking, sleeping.

There can be such powerful feelings that leave us moving away from greater understanding of why these things occur aka we do them. Frequently, my work with patients is in these areas and can help provide relief.

Here is an article, from current news, that provides a great illustration of how anyone can find themselves in a situation they would never wish for.

Want to study less? Well then sleep more...

Emerging research discovers that while infants sleep they are reprocessing what they have learned. German researchers found that babies of the age from nine to 16 months remember the names of objects better if they had a short nap. And only after sleeping can they transfer learned names to similar new objects. The infant brain thus forms general categories during sleep, converting experience into knowledge.

This process is similar to what we see in adults and adolescents. For exactly this reason it is critical that students sleep well and ideally, have a regular sleep time when studying. It can also be beneficial to sleep or take a nap following studying new material. It is important to keep in mind that you do not want to be to fatigue when studying or it can interfere with information retention.
